I need urgent help

We're working with Minds Information team to understand AI use and how it impacts our members.

We know that people use AI for all kinds of things; from work tasks, to practical life admin like recipes.

For some people, getting into the habit of using AI for one type of task can be a gateway to other types of AI use.

Minds Information team have begun research and found a broad range of reasons that people might use AI in relation to their mental health. They include:

  • Venting
  • Articulating feelings to self (reflecting)
  • Articulating self to others (drafting)
  • Company
  • Comfort
  • Validation
  • Crisis support
  • Practical support tools (plans, letters)
  • Breathing exercises
  • Reality testing
  • Talking to lost loved ones
  • Distraction
  • A tool to complement therapy
  • Diagnosing/recognising mental health problems
  • Mental health literacy
  • Coping with voices

They don’t all fit perfectly, but we’ve roughly categorised those experiences into three ‘use cases’:

1) AI as a companion (e.g., romantic partner)

2) AI as a thinking partner/life coach

3) AI as a therapist

During the week, Minds Information team, Rosie and Lottie, will be gathering insight from Side by Side memebrs to help shape our understanding and information.
