I need urgent help

Hi everyone,

As you may remember, a little while ago we had Mind's research team help gather and analyse your thoughts about our community guidelines. This work was done to make sure our guidelines reflect what the community feels comfortable seeing in this space.

Below is a list of the areas where you will see updates:

Food, weight and exercise

UPDATE: Members can talk about distances run, walked, times spent walking, running, ect.

UPDATE: Members can talk about changes to weight in very general terms. It’s ok to talk about weight without giving details or descriptions of loss or gain.

“I think cooking and food can be a great source of comfort for people and a good way for them to connect with others” - Side by Side Member

Scars

UPDATE: Members can talk about scars from injury, accident, self-harm, suicide, violence, or abuse. However, standard guidelines apply, that members cannot describe details of the harm.

UPDATE: Members can talk about medical procedures. However, members must be mindful not to include details that could be difficult or upsetting for people who may be squeamish.

UPDATE: Members can post about surgery from violence, abuse or unintentional injury in general terms. Guidelines apply that details and descriptions are not ok.

UPDATE: Members can post in a way that is suggestive of medical treatment from accidental injury. e.g. “I’m getting my shoulder put back into place after my bike accident”.

CLARIFICATION:

  • No photos of medical procedures (images of recently operated body parts)
  • No photos where the focus is on scars, casts, plasters, or bandages. It's ok if the post is about something else and happens to show these things.

“I think it’s ok to show self-harm scars… I think the bigger danger is in making people who self harm feel ashamed and unacceptable” - Side by Side Member

Controversial figures

UPDATE: Members cannot post about political figures/controversial figures, (this includes text and photos/memes)

The guidelines will consider controversial figures as people who have been convicted of crimes or have allegations made against them.

UPDATE: Members cannot post about political groups/cults.
Cults are groups with beliefs that are extreme or dangerous, and the wellbeing of those within them can be at risk.

“I think these things have a place but not on mental health peer support platform because it could cause conflict in a place where people should be showing compassion and care” - Side by Side Member

Religion

CLARIFICATION: Members can post about religion.

CLARIFICATION: Members can share religious passages and texts.

  • We will hide anything that attempts to share your personal faith as if it is a fact.
  • Members must not offer support through religious beliefs. For example, it’s not ok to say “God will save you”.

UPDATE: Images of religious figures are ok. But standard guidelines apply that images containing any graphic, inappropriate, or offensive imagery will be hidden.

“I think sharing one’s beliefs is fine but not to be used as advice” - Side by Side Member

Images of Members

We will share a poll at a future date to get a definitive yes or no on pictures of members.

This is because the margins were quite slim in the current research, and we know there are members worried about “catfishing”.

Images of “Semi-nudity”

CLARIFICATION: Semi-nude photos must be hidden if they are sexual, provocative, objectifying etc.

However, it’s ok to post images where the semi-nudity is contextually appropriate. For example, an athlete in swimwear, or a man on the beach, with no sexual connotations.

These updates are based on community research, carried out by the Evaluation, Performance & Research team in June 2024. For any questions or clarifications, please email sidebysideonline@mind.org.uk.
